Developing a Watershed Characteristics Database to Improve Low Streamflow Prediction
نویسندگان
چکیده
Information regarding topographic, meteorologic, geologic, and geomorphic characteristics is increasingly available in spatially explicit digital formats. Of interest is whether enhanced spatial processing of newly available digital grids can lead to new estimators of watershed characteristics which may in turn, improve our ability to predict extreme hydrologic events. Regional hydrologic models of low-flow processes often produce estimators with unacceptably large errors. Using a continuous digital elevation model ~DEM! of the conterminous United States, watershed boundaries were developed for the streamflow gauges of the USGS’s Hydro-Climatic Data Network. Using these watershed boundaries, many watershed characteristics were developed from digital grids, including: the original DEM, the USDA’s State Soil Geographic grids, and the Spatial Climate Analysis Service’s orographically weighted precipitation and temperature grids of varying spatial and temporal resolution. Digital processing of grids leads to improvements in estimation and reproducibility of spatial statistics over traditional manual processing approaches. Low-flow regional regression models were developed for regions across the conterminous United States. Inclusion of the new watershed characteristics led to improvements in regional regression models for all regions. The inclusion of hydrogeologic indices, in particular a new smoothed baseflow recession constant estimator, led to dramatic improvements in low-flow prediction. Systematic uncertainty reduction strategies for developing streamflow forecasts utilizing multiple climate models and hydrologic models
Recent studies show that multimodel combinations improve hydroclimatic predictions by reducing model uncertainty. Given that climate forecasts are available from multiple climate models, which could be ingested with multiple watershed models, what is the best strategy to reduce the uncertainty in streamflow forecasts? To address this question, we consider three possible strategies: (1) reduce t...

Water is one of the most critical resources derived from natural systems. While it has long been recognized that forest disturbances like fire influence watershed streamflow characteristics, individual studies have reported conflicting results with some showing streamflow increases postdisturbance and others decreases, while other watersheds are insensitive to even large disturbance events. Cha...

متن کاملToward a Reliable Prediction of Streamflow Uncertainty: Characterizing and Optimization of Uncertainty Using MCMC Bayesian Framework
Streamflow quantification in the southeastern (SE) landscape is subject to a range of uncertainties due to spatially heterogeneous and complex nature of the coastal plain hydrological system. This paper aims to address the question of how the parameter and total uncertainty quantifications in the Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model can effectively influence on streamflow prediction in the...
متن کاملInvestigation of the complexity of streamflow fluctuations in a large heterogeneous lake catchment in China
The occurrence of flood and drought frequency is highly correlated with the temporal fluctuations of streamflow series; understanding of these fluctuations is essential for the improved modeling and statistical prediction of extreme changes in river basins. In this study, the complexity of daily streamflow fluctuations was investigated by using multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DF...
